Original Scale Editions

Most reproductions begin with a frame size. We begin with the work.

A painting, drawing or print has a physical presence as well as an image. Some works were made on an intimate scale and reward close looking. Others occupy more space and meet the viewer differently. Reduce everything to Small, Medium and Large and something of that character is lost.

Palatine Editions starts instead with the dimensions recorded by the museum that holds the original. We reproduce the complete work at that scale, without enlarging it to fill a wall or reducing it to fit a convenient format.

The result is a collection in which a small work is allowed to remain small, a larger work retains its presence, and the differences between them become part of the experience.

A collection built work by work

Palatine Editions is not organised around standard decorative sizes. Each work is assessed individually: its recorded dimensions, source image, proportions and presentation all have to work together before it enters the collection.

That means the collection will always be selective. It also means that works by the same artist may arrive at very different sizes, just as they do in museums.

For the client, the choice is therefore not between three sizes of the same image. It is between works, each with its own scale and presence.

A considered presentation

The work comes first, but presentation matters.

For each edition we consider the relationship between the image, the surrounding space, the frame finish, paper and glazing. One combination is recommended, while the available alternatives remain yours to choose.

The aim is not to make every work look alike. It is to give each one a presentation that feels coherent with the work while preserving its Original Scale.
