Our Ethos

Palatine Editions was created from a simple idea: a work of art should be reproduced with respect for the physical character of the original, not treated as an image to be resized and packaged for convenience.

Original Scale

Respecting the work means respecting its scale.

Most art-print shops offer the same image in a choice of Small, Medium and Large sizes. We take a different approach. For each edition, we begin with the recorded dimensions of the original work and reproduce the complete image at that scale, preserving its proportions and avoiding enlargement, reduction, cropping or distortion.

Scale changes the encounter. A small, intimate work can draw you closer. A larger work has a different physical presence. Change the size substantially and the image may remain recognisable, but the relationship between viewer and artwork changes with it.

We would not crop a work to make it fit a frame, alter its colours to suit a room, or distort its proportions for convenience. We believe its scale deserves the same respect.

Digital printing works in whole pixels, so translating recorded physical dimensions into a production file can involve negligible technical rounding. What we do not do is deliberately enlarge or reduce a work to make it fit a standard product size. If a work cannot be presented convincingly at Original Scale within our framing system, we do not offer it.

A considered presentation

Respect for the work does not stop at scale. We assess each edition individually and recommend the frame, paper and glazing combination we believe best complements it.

The recommendation is based on the character of the particular work: its palette, tonal range, texture, line and detail, and the way different materials affect how those qualities are seen. Our recommended presentation is preselected when the product page opens, while the final choice remains yours.

Building a collection

Choosing what you live with is an act of curation. A collection is built through individual acts of choice.

Palatine provides the work, its context and a considered presentation. You decide what belongs in your collection.

More than an image

Each edition is produced from a carefully sourced high-resolution master using fine-art giclée printing with pigment-based archival inks. Every work also has its own About This Work page, with background on the artist and artwork, its recorded dimensions and source, and the way the Palatine edition is presented. Each order includes a complimentary Palatine art card.

Our aim is simple: not merely to reproduce an image, but to think seriously about how the work should be seen, understood and lived with.

Palatine Editions is independent of the museums and collections that hold the original works or supply source imagery, and is not endorsed by them.

One work. One scale. As close as we can bring you to the original.
