A Clam-Bake — About This Work

Winslow Homer, 1873

About the Work

Boys rest among coastal rocks beneath a broad sea horizon. Homer joins small human incidents with the larger shape of the shore, keeping the scene grounded in the particular surfaces of a beach.

The watercolour belongs to his early work at Gloucester in 1873. The museum notes the continuing importance of line in these paintings, where colour can behave like an addition to a drawn framework.

Homer later combined the composition with other sketches for an illustration published that August. The sheet therefore stands both as an image in its own right and as part of an exchange between watercolour and printed illustration.

Why Original Scale?

Most art-print shops offer the same image in a choice of Small, Medium and Large sizes. We take a different approach. For each edition, we begin with the recorded dimensions of the original work and reproduce the complete image at that scale, preserving its proportions and avoiding enlargement, reduction, cropping or distortion.
