A Fisherman's Daughter — About This Work
Winslow Homer, 1873
About the Work
Three girls sit on rocks by the shore, the central figure holding a vivid red lobster. An overturned boat rests on the dunes behind them, while the figures’ lowered gazes give the bright scene an unexpectedly quiet mood.
Homer painted the watercolor in Gloucester, Massachusetts, during his first sustained period of working in the medium. The Cleveland Museum of Art links the scene to the precarious life of fishing families, for whom long absences and the possibility of loss made waiting a familiar part of daily life.
The sheet measures 32.9 × 24.2 cm. The 30 × 40 cm frame keeps the low horizontal composition at Original Scale while leaving enough surrounding space for the watercolor to remain visually light.

Why Original Scale?
Most art-print shops offer the same image in a choice of Small, Medium and Large sizes. We take a different approach. For each edition, we begin with the recorded dimensions of the original work and reproduce the complete image at that scale, preserving its proportions and avoiding enlargement, reduction, cropping or distortion.
