Adeline Ravoux — About This Work
Vincent van Gogh, 1890
About the Work
In May 1890, Vincent van Gogh arrived in Auvers-sur-Oise, north of Paris, and rented a room at the inn of Arthur Ravoux. This portrait, painted during the final months of Van Gogh’s life, depicts Ravoux’s thirteen-year-old daughter, Adeline.
The Cleveland Museum of Art notes that Van Gogh wanted his portraits to do more than reproduce a photographic likeness, using expressive colour to convey contemporary life. Adeline herself did not think the portrait resembled her, although the museum notes a striking resemblance to a photograph of her in later life.
The original measures 50.5 × 50.2 cm. Presenting the complete image at its recorded scale preserves the portrait’s intimate, near-square format, while the surrounding white area accommodates it within the 60 × 60 cm frame.

Why Original Scale?
Most art-print shops offer the same image in a choice of Small, Medium and Large sizes. We take a different approach.
