Andromeda — About This Work

Rembrandt van Rijn, c. 1630

About the Work

Rembrandt isolates a single instant from the Greek myth. Andromeda has been chained to a rock as a sacrifice to a sea monster, but rather than showing the monster, Perseus or the rescue, he concentrates on the frightened young woman alone. The narrative is compressed into her exposed figure, raised hands and anxious expression, making fear itself the centre of the painting.

Painted around 1630, when Rembrandt was still in Leiden, Andromeda is an oil painting on panel measuring 34 × 24.5 cm. The Mauritshuis notes both the emotional concentration of the scene and the naturalism of the nude, which is deliberately remote from an idealised classical body. Its small scale reinforces that intimacy: this is an image to approach closely rather than a panoramic mythological spectacle.

The painting also shows how much Rembrandt could suggest with a restricted setting. Andromeda emerges from a dark, rocky ground, her pale body carrying most of the light while the surrounding space remains subdued. That contrast gives the figure both vulnerability and immediacy. The original is in the Mauritshuis, The Hague, inventory number 707.

Why Original Scale?
