Bacchanal with a Wine Vat — About This Work

Andrea Mantegna, 1470–80

About the Work

Twelve figures populate the engraved scene around a large wooden vat. Bacchus appears crowned and composed while the people surrounding him struggle with intoxication.

Mantegna was an early Italian practitioner of engraving. Cleveland notes the work’s shallow stage-like arrangement, which recalls Roman sarcophagus reliefs, and the technical irregularities possible in early engraved impressions.

The sheet measures 30 × 43.8 cm, and the canonical 40 × 50 cm landscape frame preserves that recorded size without enlarging the print.

Why Original Scale?

Most art-print shops offer the same image in a choice of Small, Medium and Large sizes. We take a different approach. For each edition, we begin with the recorded dimensions of the original work and reproduce the complete image at that scale, preserving its proportions and avoiding enlargement, reduction, cropping or distortion.
