Bathers Playing with a Crab — About This Work

Pierre-Auguste Renoir, c. 1897

About the Work

In Bathers Playing with a Crab, Renoir returns to the bather motif that occupied him repeatedly in his later career. The figures are placed within a warm, loosely painted landscape, with the small crab providing a specific moment of observation and play.

The painting's softer, more continuous handling differs from the broken brushwork associated with Renoir's earlier Impressionist period. Flesh, foliage and ground are brought together through related warm tones rather than sharply separated.
