Boy with Anchor — About This Work
Winslow Homer, 1873
About the Work
A boy sits against an anchor beside the sea. The heavy object gives the small figure a strong physical counterpart, making the contrast between childhood and maritime equipment immediate.
The museum places the work among Homer's Gloucester watercolours of 1873 and interprets the anchor in relation to the fishing community's future. That reading remains an interpretation, rather than a documented prediction about the individual boy.
Transparent washes describe sky and shore alongside denser gouache detail. The varied handling lets the beach, cloud and figure retain different textures, giving a quiet pose a richly worked atmosphere.

Why Original Scale?
Most art-print shops offer the same image in a choice of Small, Medium and Large sizes. We take a different approach.
