Closed Eyes — About This Work

Odilon Redon, 1890

About the Work

A softly lit head appears above a low, ambiguous horizon. The eyes remain closed, while the dark, jagged forms below resist a single clear interpretation.

Cleveland describes this impression as a trial proof made while Redon was working with the printer Becquet. The museum also notes that the figure has been identified with Redon’s wife, Camille Falte, while its appearance remains androgynous.

The museum records an image extent of 24.2 × 31.2 cm. That evidence is kept distinct from the surrounding support in the canonical Original Scale treatment.

The surrounding white presentation area accommodates the artwork within the framed presentation and is incorporated into the print rather than added as a separate mount.

Frame finishes: Black, White or Natural.
Paper & glazing: Enhanced Matte + Perspex; or Enhanced Matte + Moth-Eye.

Why Original Scale?

Most art-print shops offer the same image in a choice of Small, Medium and Large sizes. We take a different approach. For each edition, we begin with the recorded dimensions of the original work and reproduce the complete image at that scale, preserving its proportions and avoiding enlargement, reduction, cropping or distortion.
