Corn Fields — About This Work
Félix Vallotton, 1900
About the Work
Green and yellow fields form broad bands below a narrow sky. Vallotton reduces the landscape to a strong arrangement of areas, letting the changes of colour do much of the work of describing distance.
The painting belongs to the period around 1900 when he increasingly concentrated on oil painting. Here the vegetation and distant contours remain suggestive, so the landscape's clarity as a design coexists with ambiguity in its smaller details.
The board support carries an image that can be followed both as countryside and as a pattern of adjoining shapes. Moving between those readings gives the quiet subject its tension, without requiring a dramatic event or a prominent figure.

Why Original Scale?
Most art-print shops offer the same image in a choice of Small, Medium and Large sizes. We take a different approach. For each edition, we begin with the recorded dimensions of the original work and reproduce the complete image at that scale, preserving its proportions and avoiding enlargement, reduction, cropping or distortion.
