Dancer at Rest — About This Work

Edgar Degas, c. 1895

About the Work

The dancer sits with one leg extended and her head resting on her hand. Degas uses dark, hazy charcoal against the beige paper, concentrating the strongest modelling around the figure’s face and torso.

Rather than presenting ballet as spectacle, the drawing catches an unguarded interval of rest. That interest in rehearsal, fatigue and offstage movement runs through much of Degas’s work on dancers.

The complete sheet measures 32.9 × 42.5 cm. At Original Scale in the 40 × 50 cm frame, the figure keeps its intimate physical presence and the surrounding paper remains part of the composition.

Why Original Scale?

Most art-print shops offer the same image in a choice of Small, Medium and Large sizes. We take a different approach. For each edition, we begin with the recorded dimensions of the original work and reproduce the complete image at that scale, preserving its proportions and avoiding enlargement, reduction, cropping or distortion.
