Fireworks at Ryōgoku, from the series One Hundred Views of Famous Places in Edo — About This Work
Utagawa Hiroshige, 1858
About the Work
Hiroshige gives almost half the composition to the dark night sky, where a rising trail and scattered bursts of fireworks hang above the Sumida River.
Below, Ryōgoku Bridge and the river are crowded with spectators. The Cleveland Museum of Art notes that businesses along the river sponsored fireworks displays in the 1850s, drawing people to the bridge, teashops, shore and pleasure boats.
The sheet measures 22 × 33.7 cm. Keeping the woodblock print at that scale within the 30 × 40 cm frame preserves its intimate vertical format and the large breathing space of the night sky.

Why Original Scale?
Most art-print shops offer the same image in a choice of Small, Medium and Large sizes. We take a different approach.
