Flower Embroidery Design for Silk Manufactory of Lyon — About This Work

Jean Baptiste Pillement, c. 1790

About the Work

Pillement’s drawing is a design for the silk manufactory of Lyon, where ornamental drawings supplied patterns for luxury textile production.

The compact sheet is organised around curling stems, leaves and flowers, with coloured crayon distinguishing the botanical forms while preserving the clarity needed for a working design.

Seen at its recorded scale, the drawing retains the intimacy of an object made for close examination rather than enlargement into a conventional decorative format.

Why Original Scale?

Most art-print shops offer the same image in a choice of Small, Medium and Large sizes. We take a different approach. For each edition, we begin with the recorded dimensions of the original work and reproduce the complete image at that scale, preserving its proportions and avoiding enlargement, reduction, cropping or distortion.
