Horse and Rider — About This Work
Edgar Degas, c. 1890
About the Work
The horse receives a more searching description than its lightly indicated rider. Repeated lines around the animal's hind legs make adjustment part of the drawing's visible structure.
The museum associates the subject with gentleman riders in steeplechasing. The top hat helps establish that social setting, while the principal visual interest remains the relationship between the horse's anatomy and its movement.
Degas does not conceal the process of reconsidering a position. The overlapping marks let the eye follow alternatives, giving the sheet a lively uncertainty that a single clean outline would remove.

Why Original Scale?
Most art-print shops offer the same image in a choice of Small, Medium and Large sizes. We take a different approach. For each edition, we begin with the recorded dimensions of the original work and reproduce the complete image at that scale, preserving its proportions and avoiding enlargement, reduction, cropping or distortion.
