Landscape — About This Work

Homer Dodge Martin, 1896

About the Work

A rough shoreline meets distant sea in loose coloured strokes. Martin gives the watercolour an open structure, allowing the eye to move from the textured coast into a less definite distance.

The museum dates the sheet to 1896. Its simple title leaves the place unidentified, so the image is best approached through its recorded medium and the visible relationships of shore, water and sky.

The handling keeps individual strokes apparent within the landscape. At the scale of the original sheet, that material economy becomes part of the subject's presence, joining a recognisable coast with the immediacy of watercolour on paper.

Why Original Scale?

Most art-print shops offer the same image in a choice of Small, Medium and Large sizes. We take a different approach. For each edition, we begin with the recorded dimensions of the original work and reproduce the complete image at that scale, preserving its proportions and avoiding enlargement, reduction, cropping or distortion.
