Landscape (The Large Tree) — About This Work

Jean Baptiste Camille Corot, c. 1865–70

About the Work

A large spreading tree anchors a dark landscape. Corot uses charcoal both as a line-making tool and as a broad tonal material, giving the tree a presence that extends beyond its outer contour.

The museum describes layering, sideways strokes and erased or worked passages in the sheet. These changes of handling create a landscape through relationships of light and darkness, with the brown paper participating in the overall tone.

The work belongs to Corot's later practice and is discussed by the museum in relation to his landscapes of recollection. Its mood need not be tied to a precisely identified site: the tree and surrounding atmosphere hold the composition together.

Why Original Scale?

Most art-print shops offer the same image in a choice of Small, Medium and Large sizes. We take a different approach. For each edition, we begin with the recorded dimensions of the original work and reproduce the complete image at that scale, preserving its proportions and avoiding enlargement, reduction, cropping or distortion.
