Landscape with Large Trees — About This Work

Gustave Courbet, c. 1870

About the Work

Large trees cluster across a sloping bank while a dark river winds through the foreground. Smudged charcoal creates a heavy sky and deep shadow, with sharper lines returning to define foliage and water.

The Cleveland Museum of Art describes the drawing as a constructed landscape rather than a record of one specific place. Courbet drew on scenery he knew in Switzerland and the Franche-Comté as well as older landscape traditions, laying in a hazy midtone before adding darker detail.

The sheet measures 52.4 × 38.1 cm. Presented at Original Scale in the 45 × 60 cm frame, the broad horizontal format is retained without cropping or enlargement.

Why Original Scale?

Most art-print shops offer the same image in a choice of Small, Medium and Large sizes. We take a different approach. For each edition, we begin with the recorded dimensions of the original work and reproduce the complete image at that scale, preserving its proportions and avoiding enlargement, reduction, cropping or distortion.
