Landscape with Three Gabled Cottages beside a Road — About This Work
Rembrandt van Rijn, 1650
About the Work
Three gabled cottages stand beside a road under a large tree. Rembrandt combines the repeated shapes of the roofs with the less regular growth above them, giving the settlement a varied but coherent outline.
Etching and drypoint establish the print's drawn surface. Their marks invite attention both to recognisable objects and to the different densities through which the landscape is assembled.
The road offers a route alongside the houses rather than a stage for a large event. Small shifts between building, tree and open ground give the scene its movement, allowing familiar rural forms to carry the composition.

Why Original Scale?
Most art-print shops offer the same image in a choice of Small, Medium and Large sizes. We take a different approach.
