Leaping Trout — About This Work

Winslow Homer, 1889

About the Work

A silver trout breaks above dark water, making the fish itself the centre of the event. Homer brings the viewer close to its leap instead of placing a fisherman in command of the scene.

The museum relates the subject to his Adirondack work and notes the combination of translucent blue-grey washes with brighter opaque touches. The changing materials help describe both the fish's surface and the abrupt movement through air.

Scraped highlights and dry brush enliven the water below. These small interruptions in the painted surface give the pond a reflective presence, setting the trout's concentrated motion against a setting that remains difficult to read completely.

Why Original Scale?

Most art-print shops offer the same image in a choice of Small, Medium and Large sizes. We take a different approach. For each edition, we begin with the recorded dimensions of the original work and reproduce the complete image at that scale, preserving its proportions and avoiding enlargement, reduction, cropping or distortion.
