Luncheon (Annette and Her Grandmother) — About This Work

Édouard Vuillard, 1899

About the Work

A child and grandmother share a densely furnished interior. Pattern and domestic objects surround them, making family life appear embedded in the room's surfaces rather than isolated against a neutral background.

The museum identifies the woman as Vuillard's mother, Marie, and the child as his niece Annette Roussel. These names give the small scene a specific family setting without requiring the figures to behave like formal portrait sitters.

The painting invites the eye to discover people within the room. Its concentrated arrangement lets the relationships between furnishings, colour and bodies carry the intimacy of the encounter.

Why Original Scale?

Most art-print shops offer the same image in a choice of Small, Medium and Large sizes. We take a different approach.
