Monsieur Martin — About This Work
Jean-François Millet, 1840
About the Work
Monsieur Martin is shown from the chest up, turning slightly as light catches his face against a dark background. The subdued setting directs attention to his expression, beard, coat and carefully placed highlights.
The Cleveland Museum of Art identifies Martin as a middle-class veterinarian and meat inspector and reads the portrait as an image of the prosperous bourgeoisie. The loose patches of light and visible brushwork also show Millet’s command of paint in a small, direct portrait.
The unframed painting measures 38 × 46 cm. The selected 40 × 50 cm portrait frame follows the artwork’s proportions closely at Original Scale, leaving narrow, deliberate margins rather than forcing it into a squarer presentation.

Why Original Scale?
Most art-print shops offer the same image in a choice of Small, Medium and Large sizes. We take a different approach. For each edition, we begin with the recorded dimensions of the original work and reproduce the complete image at that scale, preserving its proportions and avoiding enlargement, reduction, cropping or distortion.
