Near Newport — About This Work

Homer Dodge Martin, mid-1800s

About the Work

Low rocks border the coast beneath a pale sky. Martin gives the shoreline a modest scale within an open setting, allowing the quieter intervals of water and atmosphere to remain important.

The museum records the subject as Near Newport and retains a broad mid-nineteenth-century date. Neither detail needs to be made more precise through speculation about the particular day or viewpoint.

Watercolour lets the light paper contribute to the scene. The contrast between the more broken shore and the open space beyond it sustains the view, inviting attention to small changes of tone rather than a dramatic event.

Why Original Scale?

Most art-print shops offer the same image in a choice of Small, Medium and Large sizes. We take a different approach. For each edition, we begin with the recorded dimensions of the original work and reproduce the complete image at that scale, preserving its proportions and avoiding enlargement, reduction, cropping or distortion.
