Night Rain at the Azuma Shrine (from the series Eight Views of the Environs of Edo) — About This Work

Utagawa Hiroshige, mid-1830s

About the Work

Travellers approach Azuma Shrine beneath diagonally driven rain, its straight white lines creating the storm.

The view adapts a traditional Chinese Eight Views poetic subject to the outskirts of Edo.

Imported synthetic blue enlivens the subdued landscape; the museum records a 21.6 by 34.4 cm sheet.

Why Original Scale?

Most art-print shops offer the same image in a choice of Small, Medium and Large sizes. We take a different approach. For each edition, we begin with the recorded dimensions of the original work and reproduce the complete image at that scale, preserving its proportions and avoiding enlargement, reduction, cropping or distortion.
