Orchard — About This Work

Édouard Vuillard, 1897

About the Work

Trees spread across a low orchard landscape, their irregular strokes set against the more measured divisions of cultivated land. Vuillard gives both kinds of form a place within the same compact view.

The painting can be followed through the contrast between growth and arrangement. The branches resist the straighter organisation of the ground, while small changes of colour connect nearby vegetation with more distant passages.

The museum relates the imagery to recollections of walking with Vuillard, rather than identifying a single documented episode in the picture. The orchard remains an observed landscape whose movement is carried by its painted surface.

Why Original Scale?

Most art-print shops offer the same image in a choice of Small, Medium and Large sizes. We take a different approach. For each edition, we begin with the recorded dimensions of the original work and reproduce the complete image at that scale, preserving its proportions and avoiding enlargement, reduction, cropping or distortion.
