Outskirts of Paris — About This Work
Henri Rousseau, c. 1897–1905
About the Work
A river or canal crosses the foreground while houses, trees and a distant settlement occupy the far bank. A small red sail introduces a sharp accent beneath the broad sky and its rolling grey clouds.
The Cleveland Museum of Art notes that Rousseau’s small suburban landscapes differ from his better-known jungle scenes. In this work he combines precise forms with more blended modelling and freer brushwork, creating a quiet sense of depth and order.
The unframed painting measures 45.8 × 37.8 cm. The 40 × 50 cm frame closely follows its landscape proportions and preserves the complete image at Original Scale.

Why Original Scale?
Most art-print shops offer the same image in a choice of Small, Medium and Large sizes. We take a different approach. For each edition, we begin with the recorded dimensions of the original work and reproduce the complete image at that scale, preserving its proportions and avoiding enlargement, reduction, cropping or distortion.
