Portrait of a Man — About This Work
Gustave Caillebotte, 1880
About the Work
A seated man appears beside a bright balcony window. Caillebotte sets the figure within an urban interior where the contrast of light and enclosure gives the portrait much of its character.
The museum identifies the sitter as Albert Courtier and the setting as the apartment Caillebotte shared with his brother on boulevard Haussmann. The room belongs to a wider group of paintings of men within his social circle.
The sitter's profile and unguarded gaze resist the formality of a direct address to the viewer. The window offers another direction of attention, allowing the portrait to remain suspended between private company and the city beyond.

Why Original Scale?
Most art-print shops offer the same image in a choice of Small, Medium and Large sizes. We take a different approach.
