Revelation of St. John: St. Michael Fighting the Dragon — About This Work
Albrecht Dürer, 1511
About the Work
This woodcut is one of the fifteen scenes in Albrecht Dürer’s Apocalypse series. It depicts the war in heaven from the Revelation of Saint John: Saint Michael and his angels battle the dragon, identified with Satan, and the fallen angels who have taken monstrous forms.
Dürer gives the visionary subject a striking physical presence. The tightly packed combat, emphatic black line and dense hatching create extraordinary energy, while the landscape below anchors the supernatural struggle in a recognisable world.
The Cleveland Museum of Art dates this impression to 1511. At Palatine, the complete sheet is reproduced at its recorded physical scale so that the compact intensity of Dürer’s composition is preserved rather than enlarged to fit a conventional decorative size.

Why Original Scale?
