Romaine Lacaux — About This Work
Pierre-Auguste Renoir, 1864
About the Work
Romaine Lacaux sits in a grey dress over a white blouse against a patterned background. Renoir makes subtle reflected colour part of the portrait, giving light fabrics a more varied appearance than their names alone suggest.
The museum considers this possibly his earliest signed canvas. That qualified status is significant, but the painting can also be approached directly through the care with which the child and the surrounding textiles are described.
The face provides a steady focus within the quieter movement of pattern and drapery. Changes of colour around the figure help establish its presence without requiring a broad gesture or a dramatic expression.

Why Original Scale?
Most art-print shops offer the same image in a choice of Small, Medium and Large sizes. We take a different approach.
