Rural Scene — About This Work

Jean Baptiste Pillement, 1762

About the Work

Figures and livestock gather beneath a tree beside water. Pillement combines familiar rural elements into a compact scene whose activity is held within a broad landscape structure.

Black chalk or crayon establishes the image, while brown-ink framing lines give it a defined boundary on the sheet. The distinction between the drawn scene and its surrounding paper remains part of the work's appearance.

The small figures encourage close attention without overwhelming their setting. Their relationship with the tree and water gives the composition a human measure, allowing the landscape to be read through both its larger forms and its quieter incidents.

Why Original Scale?

Most art-print shops offer the same image in a choice of Small, Medium and Large sizes. We take a different approach. For each edition, we begin with the recorded dimensions of the original work and reproduce the complete image at that scale, preserving its proportions and avoiding enlargement, reduction, cropping or distortion.
