Seated Peasant Resting on a Hoe — About This Work

Jean-François Millet, 1829–75

About the Work

A seated peasant leans forward against a hoe. The implement joins the resting body to the work from which it has paused, giving the figure's posture both a practical support and a clear visual direction.

Fabricated black chalk allows Millet to gather the body into a strong dark form. The drawing's interest lies in weight and inclination, with the bent position carrying the subject more directly than an elaborate narrative.

The surrounding sheet keeps the solitary figure in view. At the original scale, the economy of the marks becomes apparent: a small number of relationships between body, tool and ground can sustain the whole composition.

Why Original Scale?

Most art-print shops offer the same image in a choice of Small, Medium and Large sizes. We take a different approach. For each edition, we begin with the recorded dimensions of the original work and reproduce the complete image at that scale, preserving its proportions and avoiding enlargement, reduction, cropping or distortion.
