Self-Portrait — About This Work

Armand Guillaumin, c. 1872–74

About the Work

Guillaumin faces the viewer with a sombre gaze and a firmly modelled head. Dark tones give the portrait a concentrated presence, keeping attention close to the face rather than dispersing it through a setting.

The museum connects the work with the early 1870s, when railway employment limited the time available for painting. That circumstance provides context for the portrait without making its expression a transparent record of one feeling.

The quieter palette differs from the intense colour often associated with Guillaumin's later work. Here the image depends on tonal weight and direct encounter, allowing the face to hold its place through restraint.

Why Original Scale?

Most art-print shops offer the same image in a choice of Small, Medium and Large sizes. We take a different approach. For each edition, we begin with the recorded dimensions of the original work and reproduce the complete image at that scale, preserving its proportions and avoiding enlargement, reduction, cropping or distortion.
