Shah Jahan — About This Work

Rembrandt van Rijn, c. 1656–61

About the Work

Shah Jahan stands in a long robe, described through brown ink and wash. The upright figure holds the sheet with a measured stillness, while the drawn details invite a closer examination of dress and stance.

The museum identifies this as one of Rembrandt's drawings after Indian miniatures. It relates the model to an album likely studied in the Netherlands, preserving the qualification around how the source reached him.

This is therefore an encounter mediated through another image. The drawing records Rembrandt's attention to a Mughal representation rather than a meeting with the emperor, a distinction that is essential to its historical setting.

Why Original Scale?

Most art-print shops offer the same image in a choice of Small, Medium and Large sizes. We take a different approach.
