Sheet of Studies — About This Work

Paul Cezanne, 1871–76

About the Work

Small figure studies occupy a tall sheet, retaining their independence rather than combining into a continuous event. The page records several moments of attention, each contributing to a larger field of working marks.

Graphite and brown ink offer different degrees of certainty and emphasis. A light beginning can sit beside a darker passage, allowing the viewer to distinguish stages or kinds of investigation without assuming a complete chronology.

The full sheet matters because the spaces between studies belong to the drawing's organisation. Preserving them allows the page to remain a working surface, with its changing scales and intervals intact.

The surrounding white presentation area accommodates the artwork within the framed presentation and is incorporated into the print rather than added as a separate mount.

Paper & glazing: Enhanced Matte + Perspex; or Enhanced Matte + Moth-Eye.

Why Original Scale?

Most art-print shops offer the same image in a choice of Small, Medium and Large sizes. We take a different approach. For each edition, we begin with the recorded dimensions of the original work and reproduce the complete image at that scale, preserving its proportions and avoiding enlargement, reduction, cropping or distortion.
