Shepherds in a Landscape — About This Work

Jean Baptiste Pillement, 1779

About the Work

Shepherds and livestock occupy a landscape of rocks and tall trees. Pillement sets their smaller forms within a larger arrangement of vegetation and distance, inviting the eye to move from the inhabited foreground towards a softer atmosphere beyond.

The museum draws attention to the pastel's contrasting handling: sharper and more colourful nearby, subtler in the distance. That change gives the space depth without making every part equally detailed.

This is discussed as a picturesque invention rather than a literal record of one place. The figures contribute scale and activity, while the arrangement of rocks and trees provides the landscape with its own composed drama.

Why Original Scale?

Most art-print shops offer the same image in a choice of Small, Medium and Large sizes. We take a different approach. For each edition, we begin with the recorded dimensions of the original work and reproduce the complete image at that scale, preserving its proportions and avoiding enlargement, reduction, cropping or distortion.
