Sorrente, Bains de la Reine Jeanne — About This Work
Henri Joseph Harpignies, 1848–1865?
About the Work
A rocky inlet holds tiny figures at the water's edge. Harpignies sets their scale against the coastal formations, letting the rocks provide the principal structure of the drawing.
Black and white chalk offer a direct contrast of shade and light. Their restricted range draws attention to the shape and weight of the shore, while the small human presence gives the setting a measure.
The title identifies the Baths of Queen Joanna at Sorrento, but the dating remains qualified in the museum record. Preserving that uncertainty lets the work be encountered through its catalogued place and the visible decisions of the chalk.

Why Original Scale?
Most art-print shops offer the same image in a choice of Small, Medium and Large sizes. We take a different approach. For each edition, we begin with the recorded dimensions of the original work and reproduce the complete image at that scale, preserving its proportions and avoiding enlargement, reduction, cropping or distortion.
