Still Life with Cheeses, Almonds and Pretzels — About This Work

Clara Peeters, c. 1615

About the Work

Clara Peeters sets a table with cheeses, pretzels, almonds, dried fruit, butter and costly tableware, turning a compact meal into a display of surfaces, textures and careful observation. The pale cheeses and blue-and-white dish emerge against a dark ground, while glass, metal and glazed ceramic catch small points of light.

The painting also carries unusually personal marks of authorship. Peeters signed the decorated bridal knife at the front of the table, and the pewter lid of the earthenware jug contains a tiny reflected female face that the Mauritshuis identifies as the painter herself. These details reward close looking without disturbing the stillness of the arrangement.

At its recorded size of 49.5 × 34.5 cm, the work remains intimate despite the abundance it depicts. Palatine reproduces the complete image at that scale, preserving the compact relationship between the food, vessels and surrounding darkness rather than enlarging the composition into a decorative format.

Why Original Scale?

Most art-print shops offer the same image in a choice of Small, Medium and Large sizes. We take a different approach.
