Study for "Seaweed Gatherers, Yport" — About This Work
Claude-Emile Schuffenecker, c. 1888
About the Work
A seaweed gatherer stands under a broad load carried on her back. The weight changes the outline of the figure, making the relation between body and burden the drawing's immediate subject.
The museum identifies the sheet as a study for Seaweed Gatherers, Yport, a composition known in two versions. Seen independently, the drawing concentrates on the figure that would become part of a larger painted setting.
Black chalk gives the study a restricted but flexible language. The surrounding paper allows the silhouette and the load to remain clear, bringing attention to a working posture without supplying an undocumented personal story.

Why Original Scale?
Most art-print shops offer the same image in a choice of Small, Medium and Large sizes. We take a different approach. For each edition, we begin with the recorded dimensions of the original work and reproduce the complete image at that scale, preserving its proportions and avoiding enlargement, reduction, cropping or distortion.
