Study of a Tulip (Gemarmerde van Jasper) — About This Work

Pieter Holsteyn II, c. 1645

About the Work

A tall tulip shows marbled crimson and white petals against the quiet tone of antique laid paper. Fine charcoal contours remain visible beneath its softly applied colour.

The sheet belongs to the Dutch tulip-book tradition of the seventeenth century, when distinctive varieties could command extraordinary prices. The name written beside the stem identifies this particular variety.

Cleveland records a 32 × 21.1 cm sheet. This is accession 2019.5, separate from Holsteyn’s Ammirael Winckel watercolour at 2019.4.

Why Original Scale?

Most art-print shops offer the same image in a choice of Small, Medium and Large sizes. We take a different approach. For each edition, we begin with the recorded dimensions of the original work and reproduce the complete image at that scale, preserving its proportions and avoiding enlargement, reduction, cropping or distortion.
