Study of a Tulip (Perregoen Machieu) — About This Work

Pieter Holsteyn II, c. 1645

About the Work

A red-and-white tulip is centred on a broad sheet. The quiet field around the plant makes its changes of contour and colour especially apparent, inviting a close rather than distant encounter.

Perregoen Machieu is recorded as the variety name. The museum's account of the tulip-book setting connects the image with horticultural commerce, where an individual flower's markings could distinguish one sought-after specimen from another.

Brushpoint detail combines with transparent and opaque watercolour. Keeping the sheet whole preserves the scale of that description, allowing the painted flower to retain its relationship with the paper that surrounds it.

Why Original Scale?

Most art-print shops offer the same image in a choice of Small, Medium and Large sizes. We take a different approach. For each edition, we begin with the recorded dimensions of the original work and reproduce the complete image at that scale, preserving its proportions and avoiding enlargement, reduction, cropping or distortion.
