Study of a Tulip ('t roosje) — About This Work
Pieter Holsteyn II, c. 1645
About the Work
The striped flower of 't roosje stands above long curving leaves. Holsteyn lets the foliage lead the eye towards the head, connecting the plant's broader movement with the more intricate pattern of its petals.
The museum places the sheet within a tulip book used to present varieties to potential buyers. Its beauty is inseparable from specificity: this is a named cultivated flower, described for recognition as well as visual pleasure.
The alternation of red and white keeps the flower lively against the open paper. The complete extent gives those small markings room to be examined, preserving the contrast between the flower's compact detail and the sweep of its leaves.
