Sudarium Displayed by Two Angels — About This Work
Albrecht Dürer, 1513
About the Work
Two angels hold a cloth bearing the face of Christ. The fabric joins the figures across the composition, turning an object of devotion into the centre of an encounter between image, material and viewer.
The engraving rewards attention to the different kinds of line used to establish the cloth and the surrounding figures. Its small scale makes the relationship between fine description and the larger arrangement especially important.
The face is presented on a surface within the image itself. That repeated act of looking, at an engraved sheet and at the represented cloth, gives the devotional subject a directness that does not depend on a large format.

Why Original Scale?
Most art-print shops offer the same image in a choice of Small, Medium and Large sizes. We take a different approach. For each edition, we begin with the recorded dimensions of the original work and reproduce the complete image at that scale, preserving its proportions and avoiding enlargement, reduction, cropping or distortion.
