The Brierwood Pipe — About This Work
Winslow Homer, 1864
About the Work
Homer places two soldiers in their encampment beneath a clear sky. One holds a lit pipe and watches while his companion whittles wood, their bright Zouave-style uniforms standing out against the rocky ground and tents.
The Cleveland Museum of Art notes that the painting shares its title with a contemporary poem in which a soldier smokes a brierwood pipe and imagines the end of the war. Homer had worked as an artist-reporter during the Civil War, giving the subject a close connection to his early career.
The unframed painting measures 37.5 × 42.8 cm. The 50 × 50 cm presentation preserves that scale and gives the near-square composition measured surrounding space without enlarging the image.

Why Original Scale?
Most art-print shops offer the same image in a choice of Small, Medium and Large sizes. We take a different approach.
