The Brook — About This Work
Paul Cezanne, c. 1895–1900
About the Work
Foliage and water interlock in areas of green, blue and ochre. Cézanne gives the brook its place within an arrangement of adjoining forms, so the landscape can be followed through colour as much as through individual objects.
The museum identifies the setting with the valley of the Arc River near Aix-en-Provence. It discusses the painting in terms of balance among forms and colours, providing a useful context for its densely connected surface.
The stream offers a passage into the image, but vegetation repeatedly gathers around it. Looking between those openings and the surrounding masses reveals a landscape whose structure remains active throughout, rather than settling into a simple foreground and background.

Why Original Scale?
Most art-print shops offer the same image in a choice of Small, Medium and Large sizes. We take a different approach. For each edition, we begin with the recorded dimensions of the original work and reproduce the complete image at that scale, preserving its proportions and avoiding enlargement, reduction, cropping or distortion.
