The Head of a Young Man Looking Upwards to the Right — About This Work
Giovanni Battista Tiepolo, before 1752
About the Work
A young man's head turns upwards to the right. Tiepolo gives the lifted gaze a clear direction, allowing a fragment of the figure to suggest an action extending beyond the sheet.
Red chalk is worked over black and joined by white highlights. On blue paper, these materials establish the head through changing warmth, light and shadow rather than through a uniformly dark outline.
The close view makes the turn itself the subject. Small transitions around the face and neck carry the movement, encouraging attention to how a study of one head can imply a larger composition without requiring it to be reconstructed.

Why Original Scale?
Most art-print shops offer the same image in a choice of Small, Medium and Large sizes. We take a different approach. For each edition, we begin with the recorded dimensions of the original work and reproduce the complete image at that scale, preserving its proportions and avoiding enlargement, reduction, cropping or distortion.
