The Hundred Guilder Print — About This Work

Rembrandt van Rijn, c. 1649

About the Work

The Hundred Guilder Print gathers several episodes from the Gospel of Matthew into one broad scene. Christ stands near the centre as mothers with children, the sick and other supplicants approach him, while figures at the left debate and observe. Rather than separating these encounters, Rembrandt binds them into a single crowded image of teaching, healing and attention.

The composition is organised through extraordinary contrasts of light and handling. Figures on the left are drawn with relatively open, delicate etched lines, while the right side deepens into rich passages of drypoint and shadow. Christ becomes the luminous pivot between them, and the eye moves continually between faces, gestures and pools of darkness.

This Cleveland impression is the second of two seventeenth-century states and is printed on Japanese paper. The combination of etching, engraving and drypoint allowed Rembrandt to move from fine linear description to velvety blacks within the same plate, helping make the work one of the most ambitious and technically varied prints of his career.
