The Large Plane Trees (Road Menders at Saint-Rémy) — About This Work

Vincent van Gogh, 1889

About the Work

Large plane-tree trunks dominate a road where small figures work among heaps of material. Van Gogh lets their scale and the autumn foliage shape the scene, bringing the everyday repair work into a strongly patterned landscape.

He painted the subject while living near Saint-Rémy in 1889. The museum connects the canvas with a letter to Theo describing road menders, enormous trunks and glimpses of buildings, tying the painted setting to the artist's own account.

The museum also distinguishes this canvas from a repetition in Washington, identifying the Cleveland painting as the earlier version on conservation evidence. The work's identity is thus specific, rather than interchangeable with another rendering of the same composition.

Why Original Scale?

Most art-print shops offer the same image in a choice of Small, Medium and Large sizes. We take a different approach.
