The Little Shepherd — About This Work

Jean Baptiste Camille Corot, 1855 (printed 1921)

About the Work

Corot made The Little Shepherd in 1855 using cliché-verre, a process in which a drawing scratched into a coated glass plate is printed photographically.

Trees enclose the compact pastoral landscape. At right, a standing figure plays a flute from a rock while small grazing animals occupy the middle ground; fine scratched lines and denser marks build the work’s tonal atmosphere.

This Cleveland Museum of Art impression was printed in 1921 as number 13 from an edition of 150. Palatine reproduces the complete image at its recorded 24.5 × 32.4 cm scale within a 30 × 40 cm framed presentation.

Why Original Scale?

Most art-print shops offer the same image in a choice of Small, Medium and Large sizes. We take a different approach. For each edition, we begin with the recorded dimensions of the original work and reproduce the complete image at that scale, preserving its proportions and avoiding enlargement, reduction, cropping or distortion.
