The Meeting of Christ with Martha and Mary after the Death of Lazarus — About This Work
Rembrandt van Rijn, c. 1662–65
About the Work
Christ meets Martha and Mary after their brother Lazarus's death. The clustered figures bring different degrees of agitation and stillness into a small space, with the kneeling women directing attention towards Christ.
The museum describes the attribution as a rare late drawing by Rembrandt. It draws particular attention to the contrast between Christ's composure and the repeated lines of Martha's outstretched hands.
Reed pen, brown wash and touches of white make revision part of the scene's emotional language. The uncertain positions of the hands do not simply interrupt the image; they intensify the sense of an urgent appeal taking shape.
