The Mender — About This Work
Camille Pissarro, c. 1881
About the Work
The woman bends towards her needlework near a window. Pissarro brings attention to a task that requires little outward movement, making the inclination of the body and the surrounding light carry the scene.
Ink, grey wash and touches of white work together over graphite. The combination gives the drawing both a framework of lines and broader areas of illumination, so that the figure belongs to a particular atmosphere rather than an empty outline.
Pissarro wrote the word lumière in the left margin, explicitly recording his attention to light. The notation belongs to the working sheet and makes the relationship between the sewing figure and the window especially worth examining.

Why Original Scale?
Most art-print shops offer the same image in a choice of Small, Medium and Large sizes. We take a different approach. For each edition, we begin with the recorded dimensions of the original work and reproduce the complete image at that scale, preserving its proportions and avoiding enlargement, reduction, cropping or distortion.
